Component Districts Explore Sharing and Consolidation

With New York State facing unprecedented financial challenges, school district leaders and board of education members are discussing ways to continue to provide superior educational services and opportunities for students. 

On January 31, 2011, approximately 60 superintendents and board of education members of OCM BOCES 23 component districts attended a presentation at the McEvoy Campus given by Alan Pole.

Mr. Pole, an education consultant with Castallo & Silky and also a former District Superintendent at the Delaware Chenango Madison Otsego BOCES, presented information and answered questions related to Sharing, Regional High Schools, and School District Consolidation.

OCM BOCES Graduate Featured on Local News

OCM BOCES' adult education student, Maynard Bland, was recently featured by local News Channel 9 for having changed his life in a positive way through the education he gained at BOCES.

Maynard was among 160 adult students to graduate from OCM BOCES' training programs on February 15, 2011.  Students in the following programs were recognized at a ceremony held at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool: HVAC/R, CAD Drafting and Design, Website Design and Maintenance, Central Service Technician, Construction Technology, Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide, Pharmacy Technology, Cosmetology, Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Office Technology, Pharmacy and Welding.

OCM BOCES Celebrates The Accomplishments of Adult Students

On Tuesday, February 15th, OCM BOCES celebrated the accomplishments of our adult students completing training in the following programs: HVAC/R, CAD Drafting and Design, Website Design and Maintenance, Central Service Technician, Construction Technology, Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide, Pharmacy Technology, Cosmetology, Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Office Technology, Pharmacy and Welding. More than 160 students graduated from these programs.

West Genesee Wins Sectional Level Academic Decathlon

On Saturday, February 5, 2011, students from the Cazenovia, Liverpool, North Syracuse, Tully, West Genesee and Westhill school districts competed in the 2011 sectional competition of the United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) at Westhill High School. The sectional level competition is coordinated each year by OCM BOCES as a service to districts.

The West Genesee High School Academic Decathlon team took top honors, with the Cazenovia team placing second. Both teams will advance to the New York State competition on March 11 and 12 at Onondaga Community College.

Cicero-North Syracuse High School placed third and qualified for the state competition as a wild card.

The theme of this year’s event was The Great Depression, with all areas of the competition centered on that theme, including the history, economics, science, and literature of the period.

Districts participating in the 2011 sectional level Academic Decathlon at Westhill High School included:

Cazenovia – (Coaches: Susan McKillop and Martin Kelly) Students: Maxwell Blair, Alexandra Cameron, Hannah Gravelding, Robert Louis, David Martellock, Darren Mihaich, Kyle Polhamus, and Cullen Singleton. Alternates: Sam Medbury and Avery Stone Fish.

North Syracuse – (Coaches: Theresa Rice and Shannon Brisson) Students: Alia Abuqube, Anthony Arena, Lauren Emigholz, James Froio, Brian Hertzberg, Andrew Houghtaling, Daniel Martin, Brian Sweeney and Jacob Wildin.

Liverpool – (Coach: Daryl Burrer) Students: Jon Carpenter, Nate LeClair, Ahmed Mahmoud, Lawrence Nguyen, Raj Patel, David Purvis, and Carina Sorrentino. Alternate: Sherice Simpson.

McEvoy Students Show Support For Women's Heart Health

In celebration of National Wear Red Day, students in Kate Smith's Health Occupations Technology class at the OCM BOCES McEvoy Education Campus, wore red on Friday, February 4, 2011. The students researched heart health for women, made posters and wore their red to show their support to show their support for awareness of women's heart health!
